Every Sunday you have two options. You can go to church…or not. Yes, especially since Covid it is easier to stay home and watch the livestream (or your favorite sporting event),but is this the best way….No it is not! (Excluding serious health issues, we need to be actively involved in our faith community).
Here is the problem, if we allow comfort, technology, sports, recreation or anything else to keep us from getting involved in the local church, we are missing out on a critical part of life that God calls us to live! The church needs you and you need the church.
Participating in church is not just about “getting something out of it”. It's about working with God for His greater purpose. In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul uses the analogy of the human body and its parts to describe the church and the roles we have to play. Just like our bodies, each member has a very distinct purpose that would be missed if it were gone. "If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?" (1 Corinthians 12:18)
Followers of Jesus each have gifts, talents, and abilities for the purpose of building up the church. Everyone is not created to be a preacher or worship leader, but we are all created for something! No parts of the body of Christ are unnecessary. (1 Corinthians 12:21-23). Your brethren need you!….oh by the way, this is on days other than Sunday too.
There's no better entity on earth to serve God's purposes than the local church. If you don't understand that, it's most likely because you're not participating. Stop being a spectator! Jump in, participate and get involved. Allow the church to change you! When we all start using our gifts within the church, the kingdom of God grows and amazing things take place. Does the church need me? Yes it does!
